Alderman Dowell has asked the Chicago Police Department for a statistical analysis of crime incidents in the 3rd Ward since 2001 in order to give residents a better understanding of what is happening in our neighborhood. The CPD has completed this study and has released a table breaking down crime in the 3rd Ward by type from years 2001 to 2019.
In short, the study shows that from the period between 2003 and 2018 (years 2001 and 2002 the data wasn’t accurately geocoded to the ward), total crime in the ward was at its second-lowest in 2018, trailing only 2015. Additionally, robbery and burglary in 2018 were at a sixteen year low in the ward.
As a city, we still have a long way to go to make Chicago as safe as we all want it to be. And this has to be done within the context of our continued effort to repair the relationship between the police and the community, while upholding the requirements of the recently imposed Chicago Police Department Consent Decree. However, as the data shows, in the 3rd Ward, we are on the right path in terms of combating overall crime.
Please attend your local CAPS meetings. That is the best way to contribute to the discussion regarding public safety in your specific area.
