2014 Bash on Wabash
2014 marks the Eleventh Year Anniversary for the “Bash On Wabash” with the goal of bringing neighbors and businesses alike, from near and far, to a festival that showcases the beauty, creativity, history and culture of the South Loop. Located in the heart of the neighborhood on Wabash Avenue between 13th Street and 14th Place, this years’ “Bash on Wabash” promises to be an experience to remember!

Benefiting the Greater South Loop Association (GSLA) and a portion of proceeds to the South Loop Food Pantry, this lively, colorful festival will have something to offer everyone including a wide variety of musical acts, food and beverages (including beer and wine), arts & crafts, an elaborate children’s area, vendor booths, and so much more! Get your sweat on! Meet your neighbors, see the sights of the South Loop and Chicago’s beautiful lakefront and have some healthy fun at the 2014 Bash on Wabash, the South Loop’s premier street festival.

Whole Foods Chef Demonstrations

Generously sponsored by the South Loop Whole Foods Market, the demo table gives our talented neighborhood chefs a chance to show off their stuff, and a chance for South Loop foodies to meet, chat with and learn from the folks that make the dishes we love. Acts of Kindness

Calling all kind individuals to help inspire and make someone’s day happy through the sincere kindness of our hearts. Acts of Kindness is dedicated to encouraging and empowering people to practice kindness in their everyday lives. On August 27th, they will demonstrate acts of kindness by:

Engaging and galvanizing the community with kindness
Distributing water, granola bars, kindness cards, and other items
Sharing literature on community resources and job opportunities
Engaging people with smiles, handshakes, and conversation

Bronzeville Nights

Bronzeville Nights is a an opportunity for community and business to interact in a phenomenal way. The goal is for people to learn about the great businesses, amazing business owners and spend money by shopping local. It is an event series pairing local arts, culture and entertainment in some of the Bronzeville area’s best businesses.

The kick off to the event series is August 13, August 27, September 10 and September 24. Join Quad Communities Development Corporation (QCDC) as they connect some of the hottest in arts, culture and entertainment in our local businesses. There will be an interactive mural design, lead by artist Paul Branton. Tasting menu provided by local area businesses. Stop by H-Dogs, Jokes and Notes and Blanc Gallery for an evening of fun.

Dinah Washington Honorary Street Renaming

Ruth Lee Jones (aka Dinah Washington) moved to the south side of Chicago at the age of three. Like many other accomplished musicians, she attended DuSable High School. At the age of fifteen, her talent was noticed after she won a talent contest at the Regal Theater formerly located at 47th and Grand Boulevard (now King Dr.). She then began performing with many jazz greats like Lionel Hampton, Wynton Kelly, Cannonball Adderley, and Joe Zawinul among others. She also enjoyed a successful solo career that yielded a 1959 Grammy Award for “What A Difference A Day Makes” and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

Join Third Ward Alderman Pat Dowell, Al Carter Bey and WHPK Radio, and others for the honorary street renaming of the 3800 block of South Prairie Avenue to celebrate the accomplishments of one of Bronzeville’s legends.

African Festival of the Arts

Celebrating the African Festival of the Art’s 25th year, the festival grounds in Chicago’s Washington Park will come alive as a simulated African village over Labor Day weekend. Attendees will be transported across the Diaspora with interactive demonstrations, vibrant drumming, historical artifacts, colorful and rich fabrics, informative health and wellness workshops as well as fascinating entertainment.

This years Festival line up includes Grammy-Award winning vocalist, songwriter, producer and Jazz musician Cassandra Wilson Johnson as well as Salif Keita Malian music ambassador and afro-pop phenom. Visit or the AFA’s Facebook page for updated performance and festival information.

Ambassadors for Peace

Later this month, several concerned citizens and community leaders (Sister Afrika Porter, Spencer Leak Jr., Nicole Wheatly, Dorian Minor and many others) will convene for an “emergency peace summit” to tackle some of the issues relative to gun violence in the city of Chicago.

This Peace Rally will have 25 to 30 social service organizations present, so that families can have access to resources that address the critical issues they are faced with (i.e. gun violence, parental socioeconomic status, child neglect and abandonment, homelessness, lack of economic development and lack of self- esteem).
